Cobra Kai Season 5 premiered back in September this year and was an instant hit on Netflix, but surprisingly it hasn't been renewed for the sixth season yet. There could be many reasons behind this delay, but the viewership is not the problem for this show as it was present in the Netflix global top 10 shows for five consecutive weeks after its premiere.

As per Netflix, Cobra Kai Season 5 raked more than 274M hours in its first 28 days after the premiere. The numbers are more than enough to confirm that it was a big hit and should easily get another shot. The ending of the fifth season also teased the next chapter in the story, which could also be the final one. So, if everything points in a single direction, then why Netflix has delayed the announcement?

Netflix generally takes 28-35 days to confirm the cancelation of a show, but for renewal, it takes 28-56 days to announce. Cobra Kai has crossed both timelines, and there is neither good news nor a bad one, and seeing the viewership data and the show's popularity, we can rule out the cancelation for now. However, it is not the first that Netflix has taken this long to announce a show's renewal, earlier, Squid Game Season 2 official announcement was made almost 10 months after the show's release, which broke all the viewership records of the streamer. The reason for the delay mainly includes backend negotiations, including the script, the budget, the delivery date, and more.

However, in the case of Cobra Kai, the reason seems to be entirely different. The creators of the show are also producing another series for Netflix. Titled Obliterated, the new Netflix series comes from Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald. The series started filming in August and wrapped up filming in the last week of November 2022. According to our source, Netflix has prioritized Obliterated over Cobra Kai and it is reportedly planned to release in the Summer 2023. Even though the filming has wrapped, creators are running on a tight schedule to complete the post-production of the show. This could also mean that even Cobra Kai Season 6 scripts are not yet ready, which is needed by Netflix to announce the renewal.

So, if rumors were to be believed, and ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6 scripts are not yet ready, we might not hear Season 6 announcements for at least 3-4 months more. This will also result in the show being further delayed and likely to arrive in mid-2024.

In the fifth season's finale titled, "Head of the Snake," a fight night erupts as Johnny, Daniel, Chozen, and their students summon all of their abilities and might to expose Silver Terry and take him down. The fight begins and Daniel gets in a solid hit. During the fight, Daniel recalls the quicksilver technique and kicks Terry in the face. Daniel is greeted by his wife Amanda, daughter Sam, and son Anthony after finally defeating Silver. In the final scene, Kreese's body is brought into a mortuary examination room. The doctor checks the wound but appears perplexed. Kreese wakes up and knocks out the two police officers. Kreese is then seen walking down the hall dressed as a doctor. The alarms go off as Kreese walks right out of the jail.

Kreese is likely to return as the main villain in Cobra Kai Season 6, which could also be the final chapter of this Karate Kid saga on Netflix. However, Sony has already announced a new Karate Kid movie, which will be an entirely new story from the same franchise.

Written by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg's production company Counterbalance Entertainment, executive produced Cobra Kai. Will Smith, James Lassiter, and Caleeb Pinkett Smith also executive produced along with Susan Ekins. Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are co-executive producers. Based on the film franchise The Karate Kid and produced by Sony Pictures Television, the show originally debuted on YouTube Premium before heading to Netflix for its third season.
