‘Kung Fu’ Season 2 Officially Begins Filming at The CW

The second season of CW’s Kung Fu has officially begun filming today in Vancouver, British Columbia. Season 2 of the action-drama series will shoot till March 2022 with a likely premiere in January 2022.

Earlier, the series was renewed for the second season after a strong performance in viewership. The show kicked off with more than 3.5M viewership on the premiere episode, which is a record for a Wednesday debut in 7 years since "The 100" premiere in 2014.

Showrunner Christina M. Kim confirmed the start of season 2 production via her Instagram post.

Yvonne Chapman, who played villain Zhilan has been promoted to series regular for the second season. She is a hard-edged and cunning assassin who is relentless in the pursuit of her objectives. In the first season, after snatching an ancient sword from Nicky's Shifu Pei-Ling and nearly murdering Nicky in the process, Zhilan escapes China and begins her hunt for the remaining mystical weapons. Nicky's quest for justice will be fueled by the mystery surrounding Zhilan's identity and her true intentions with those weapons.

Kung Fu follows Nicky Shen, a young Chinese American woman played by Olivia Liang, who drops out of college during her quarter-life crisis and embarks on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China. When she returns to San Francisco, she discovers that her hometown has been filled with crime and corruption, and her parents, Jin (Tzi Ma) and Mei-Li (Kheng Hua Tan), are at the hands of a strong Triad. 

To protect her community and bring criminals to justice, Nicky will rely on her tech-savvy sister Althea (Shannon Dang) and Althea's fiancé Dennis (Tony Chung), pre-med brother Ryan (Jon Prasida), Assistant District Attorney and ex-boyfriend Evan (Gavin Stenhouse), and a new love interest Henry (Eddie Liu), as well as her martial arts skills and Shaolin values. All while on the hunt for the merciless assassin who murdered her Shaolin mentor Pei-Ling (Vanessa Kai) and is now after her.

Christina M. Kim co-wrote the pilot episode with Robert Berens and serves as executive producer/co-showrunner. Executive producers include Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Martin Gero, and David Madden. The pilot episode was directed and co-executive produced by Hanelle Culpepper. Kung Fu is produced by Berlanti Productions and Quinn's House in association with Warner Bros. Television and is based on Ed Spielman's original series.
