The film is set in Stockholm 2021 and centers on the love story between two youngsters, Elisabeth and John-John. They are raised in the same city, yet they live light-years apart, separated socially, economically, and culturally. But their two worlds collide when they start in the same high school class.

The cast of the movie includes, Elsa Öhrn as Elisabeth, who is making her acting debut with this film. John-John is portrayed by newcomer Mustapha Aarab. The film also stars Magnus Krepper, Albin Grenholm, Otto Hargne, Loreen, Marika Lagercrantz, Simon Mezher, Jonay Pineda Skallak and Elsa Bergström Terent.

The Production of Vinterviken 2021 started in Stockholm, Sweden, last year in April. The Swedish language film is co-produced by Filmlance, Netflix, and Sveriges Television and is a modern adaptation of Mats Wahl's acclaimed novel Vinterviken.

Vinterviken 2021 is produced by Filmlance International, part of Banijay, with Teresa Alldén as producer and Alexis Almström as director. Dunja Vujovic has penned the script. The three of them have also collaborated previously on Top Dog, a TV series based on the Jens Lapidus trilogy.

At the time of announcing the movie, director Alexis Almström, said, “I will never forget when I watched Vinterviken as a teenager in the 90s. Since then, a lot has happened, and not all of it has been for the better. Young people, regardless of their background, are increasingly feeling hopeless. As a result, I'm thrilled to bring this positive story about young loves breaking down social barriers to the Netflix audience globally.”
